Aldrich Lake aka Loon Lake

Aldrich Lake aka Loon Lake

Aldrich Lake  also known as Loon Lake is another gorgeous opportunity wasted courtesy of a government that claims to love tourism as long as they do not have to spend a dime on it, so they can prop up their own projects south of Hope with our forestry dollars. The cost of putting in a decent campgrounds is minimal considering the return on investment.  This lake was named after John Aldrich who was one of the owners of the of the Duthie Mine in 1919.  The road to the lake was part of a pipeline that went from the lake to the mine, it was originally all in a straight line and you could hike from the main road directly to the mine that was still manned but not operational in the 60’s. At that time you could still drive a car down to the lake if you were careful, I did it myself many times. With zero support from our government over the years it deteriorated to pretty much 4X4 only. Even with a 4X4 in early spring it is questionable if you could get in and out without the use of a winch. The road has been 100% abandoned by our useless government. During the 60’s and 70’s it was normal to see Silvern creek full of red spawning coho and sockeye salmon, its the creek that comes from Dennis lake into Aldrich Lake and is part of the headwaters of the Copper River that crosses the highway near Terrace BC.  (this is a small lake < 400 Ha)

If there are any salmon that come back there are more a miracle than a norm, few people ever see what was once an annual norm.
